(Scypre.com) – A prominent Democratic strategist is sounding the alarm that recent violent demonstrations in Los Angeles—sparked by protests against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)—may be inadvertently boosting former President Donald Trump’s campaign narrative ahead of the 2024 presidential election.
The warning follows a chaotic scene in Los Angeles where anti-ICE activists clashed with law enforcement outside a federal building. Video footage shows protesters throwing objects, blocking traffic, and resisting police attempts to restore order. The unrest, which unfolded under the banner of immigrant rights, quickly spiraled into a flashpoint of public debate over law enforcement, border policy, and public safety.
Speaking on Fox News, Democratic strategist Doug Schoen said the optics of the riots are deeply problematic for President Biden’s reelection hopes. “These scenes are playing right into Trump’s hands,” Schoen stated. “When voters see chaos, when they see violence in the streets—especially in a major Democratic-led city—it reinforces Trump’s core message that only he can restore order.”
Schoen argued that many moderate and independent voters, particularly in suburban swing areas, are highly sensitive to perceptions of public safety. “The Democratic Party risks being seen as unable—or unwilling—to control its own base,” he warned. “It’s a major vulnerability.”
Trump’s campaign has wasted no time capitalizing on the unrest. In a Truth Social post, Trump called the protests “a preview of what Joe Biden’s America looks like—lawless, leaderless, and dangerous.” The former president reiterated his promise to deploy federal resources to crack down on crime and border insecurity if elected.
Meanwhile, Democrats are facing internal pressure over how to respond. Progressives within the party argue that the protests reflect legitimate outrage over ICE practices and immigration enforcement policies that disproportionately affect marginalized communities. However, more centrist voices are urging party leaders to draw a clear line against violence and disorder.
LAPD Chief Dominic Choi issued a statement defending the department’s response, saying officers acted appropriately in dispersing the crowd after the protest turned violent. “While we respect the right to peaceful protest, attacks on officers and property destruction will not be tolerated,” Choi said.
The Biden administration has so far remained relatively quiet on the issue, offering no official comment as of Tuesday afternoon. But political analysts say silence could be risky.
“Every day the White House delays addressing this head-on, Trump’s message gets louder and more convincing to swing voters,” said political consultant Lisa Booth. “This is more than a local issue now—it’s a national political liability.”
As both parties gear up for a contentious general election cycle, the fallout from the LA protests may serve as a critical test of how Democrats balance progressive activism with broader electoral strategy.
