(Scypre.com) – In a devastating incident on Chicago’s South Side, eight individuals were shot at a family gathering on Saturday night, resulting in the death of a 7-year-old girl and critically injuring two other children, according to police officials. The attack, which occurred in the vicinity of 52nd Street and Damen Avenue, is believed by authorities to be connected to gang conflicts.
The Chicago Police Department reported that the young girl suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head. Additionally, two boys, aged 1 and 7, sustained multiple gunshot injuries and were in critical condition following the event. Chicago Police Department Deputy Chief Don Jerome provided details of the tragic incident during a press conference held at the scene.
“As police officers, our first responsibility is to preserve life,” Jerome stated. Responding officers arrived shortly after a gunfire detection system triggered an alert around 9 p.m. They provided immediate first aid, using tourniquets and chest seals to manage the wounds of the victims, who ranged in age from 1 to 40 years old.
The victims were part of a family gathering and were outside when the shooting unfolded. They were quickly transported to local hospitals by the Chicago Fire Department for urgent medical care.
Deputy Chief Jerome also shed light on the ongoing investigation, noting that early witness reports indicated the presence of two shooters on foot. “This was not a random act of violence,” Jerome emphasized. “It was likely gang-related. Regardless of the motivation for this incident, three innocent children were struck tonight, and one of them tragically succumbed to her wounds.”
Jerome condemned the shooters’ actions as “horrific and unacceptable,” highlighting the urgent need for community and law enforcement collaboration to address the root causes of such violence and prevent future tragedies.
