PepsiCo Bans Artificial Ingredients—Here’s What’s Changing

(Scypre.com) – PepsiCo announced plans to remove all artificial colors from its popular snack brands Lay’s and Tostitos by the end of 2025. This move aligns with growing consumer demand for cleaner ingredients and increased regulatory pressure from U.S. health officials.

During an April 24 earnings call, PepsiCo CEO Ramon Laguarta stated that over 60% of the company’s product portfolio already lacks artificial colors, emphasizing the company’s commitment to reducing artificial ingredients. He cited Lay’s and Tostitos as examples, noting that both brands will be free of artificial colors by year-end.

This initiative follows a broader industry trend toward natural ingredients, with companies exploring alternatives such as beet juice, carrot extract, and cochineal insects to replace synthetic dyes.

The decision comes amid heightened scrutiny from U.S. health authorities. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has urged food companies to eliminate artificial dyes, citing potential links to health issues like ADHD and obesity. The FDA plans to revoke authorization for certain synthetic dyes and collaborate with the industry to eliminate others by the end of 2026.

Consumer advocacy groups have also pushed for transparency and healthier food options, influencing companies to reformulate products to meet these expectations.

Transitioning to natural dyes presents challenges, including higher costs and supply chain complexities. Natural alternatives can be less stable and more expensive than synthetic dyes, requiring significant adjustments in production processes.

Despite these hurdles, PepsiCo remains committed to meeting consumer demand for cleaner ingredients. The company is investing in research and development to ensure that the quality and appearance of its products remain consistent during this transition.

As the food industry adapts to changing regulations and consumer preferences, PepsiCo’s initiative may set a precedent for other companies to follow suit in prioritizing natural ingredients.
