Poll Shock: Trump Slips, Democrats Crash Even Harder

(Scypre.com) – As President Donald Trump approaches the 100-day mark of his second term, his approval ratings have declined, yet the Democratic Party faces even more significant challenges, with their favorability ratings reaching historic lows.

Recent polls indicate a downward trend in President Trump’s approval ratings. The Economist/YouGov poll conducted from May 2–5 shows that 42% of Americans approve of Trump’s job performance, while 52% disapprove, resulting in a net approval of -10%. This marks a continuation of a decline observed over the past several weeks.

Aggregated data from various polling organizations reflect similar sentiments. For instance, Real Clear Politics reports a 45.2% approval and 51.1% disapproval rating as of May 5, 2025. These figures suggest that while Trump’s approval has dipped, it remains relatively stable compared to the Democratic Party’s ratings.

The Democratic Party is experiencing unprecedented lows in public favorability. A Fox News national poll conducted from April 18–21 indicates that only 41% of respondents view the Democratic Party favorably, while 56% view it unfavorably. This represents the lowest favorability rating for the party in Fox News polling history.

Other polls corroborate this trend. A Pew Research survey from early April reports a 38% favorable and 60% unfavorable view of the Democratic Party. Similarly, a Wall Street Journal poll conducted in late March shows a 36% favorable and 60% unfavorable rating.

Notably, the Democratic Party’s favorability has declined even among its own supporters. The Fox News poll reveals that favorability among self-identified Democrats dropped from 87% last summer to 77% in April.

When it comes to handling national issues, public trust appears to lean slightly towards President Trump over the Democratic Party. An ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll conducted in mid-April indicates that 40% of respondents trust Trump to handle the nation’s main problems, compared to 32% who trust Democrats in Congress.

Additionally, a Reuters/Ipsos poll from late April suggests that Republicans hold a significant advantage over Democrats on two top issues: the economy and immigration.

The Democratic Party’s declining favorability is compounded by internal divisions and strategic uncertainties. Following electoral setbacks, including losing control of the White House and Senate, the party faces debates over its direction and messaging. Some members advocate for a shift towards centrist policies focusing on jobs and healthcare, while others push for progressive reforms.

This internal discord has led to a lack of cohesive messaging, potentially contributing to the party’s unfavorable public perception. Analysts suggest that without a unified vision, the Democratic Party may struggle to regain public trust and electoral success.

While President Trump’s approval ratings have declined during his second term, the Democratic Party faces more significant challenges with record-low favorability ratings and internal divisions. As both parties navigate these difficulties, their ability to address public concerns and present clear, cohesive policies will be crucial in shaping their future political fortunes.
