(Scypre.com) – A devastating knife attack in the southern Austrian city of Villach has left a 14-year-old boy dead and five others injured. Authorities have identified the incident as an act of “Islamic terrorism,” revealing that the suspect, a 23-year-old Syrian national, had alleged ties to the Islamic State (IS) group and had radicalized himself online within a brief period.
The Attack and Its Victims
The violence erupted on Saturday when the attacker, armed with a folding knife, indiscriminately stabbed pedestrians. Among the victims were two 15-year-old boys and three men, aged 28, 32, and 36. Four of the injured are currently receiving hospital treatment, while one sustained minor wounds. Tragically, a 14-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities swiftly apprehended the suspect, who is believed to have acted alone. Investigators are nonetheless exploring whether he may have had any accomplices. Following a search of his residence, police discovered IS flags on the walls. While mobile phones were seized as part of the investigation, no additional weapons or dangerous items were found.
Government Officials Condemn the Attack
Austria’s Interior Minister, Gerhard Karner, expressed deep frustration over the attack, stating his anger at “an Islamist attacker who indiscriminately stabbed innocent people here in this city.” He emphasized the need for stringent security measures to prevent future incidents.
President Alexander Van der Bellen also addressed the tragedy, describing it as “horrific.” In a statement posted on social media platform X, he acknowledged the immense suffering of the victims and their families, stating that “no words can undo the suffering, the horror, the fear.”
In response to the attack, Austria’s far-right Freedom Party leader Herbert Kickl called for stricter immigration policies. Kickl, whose party recently won a national election, demanded “a rigorous crackdown on asylum” in light of the suspect’s background.
Minister Karner further suggested implementing widespread security screenings, arguing that “it will ultimately be necessary to carry out a mass screening without cause because this assassin was not conspicuous.”
A Heroic Intervention
As panic spread through Villach, a 42-year-old Syrian man took swift action to prevent further bloodshed. The man, who works as a food delivery driver, reportedly drove towards the suspect in an effort to intervene.
His courageous act was publicly acknowledged by Carinthia’s state governor, Peter Kaiser. “This shows how closely terrorist evil but also human good can be united in one and the same nationality,” Kaiser stated, praising the man’s bravery.
Syrian Community Condemns the Violence
The Free Syrian Community of Austria has strongly distanced itself from the attack, expressing deep sorrow for the victims and their families. In a statement shared on Facebook, the organization reaffirmed its commitment to peace, stating, “We all had to flee Syria, our home country, because we were no longer safe there—no one left their country voluntarily. We are grateful to have found asylum and protection in Austria.”
The statement further emphasized that the actions of a lone extremist do not represent the broader Syrian community. “Anyone who causes strife and disturbs the peace of society does not represent the Syrians who have sought and received protection here.”
A History of Islamist Attacks in Austria
The recent violence in Villach echoes past incidents of terrorism in Austria. In November 2020, the nation was rocked by a deadly shooting in Vienna, where four people lost their lives. The perpetrator, who was ultimately shot and killed by police, had previously attempted to join IS before carrying out his attack. He was armed with an automatic rifle and wore a fake explosive vest, further fueling concerns over homegrown extremism.
