Police say a man in Florida attacked a disabled veteran who was an umpire in his son’s high school baseball game.
A man was arrested and charged with felony battery and disruption of a school function after the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office said he punched an umpire during a game. One of the players started to argue with the umpire.
Sheriff Marco Lopez said during a press conference that the umpire is there to maintain control of the game and make sure kids learn about sportsmanlike conduct.
Mora walked away from the field after Aponte-Gonzalez approached him from behind. One of the high school students’ fathers leaves the stands, walks towards the umpire and knocks him out as his back is turned.
“I don’t know what was exchanged, but that’s what upset the father.”
Lopez said during the press conference that Aponte-Gonzalez showed no remorse. Lopez said that the umpire was a veteran.
“He was a United States military veteran. He likes to give back to his community because of his passion for baseball. He enjoys dedicating his time to baseball and kids.”
The father of a player approached the umpire and knocked him out after an argument between the official and the player, according to the sheriff.
The video of the sucker punch and the umpire’s fall was released by the sheriff’s office. People rush to the spot, with one player throwing his helmet as the alleged attacker walks away.
