(Scypre.com) – Since the debut of the documentary series “Beckham,” narratives chronicling the lives of David and Victoria Beckham have been ubiquitous on the internet.
The four-part docuseries delved into various aspects, encompassing the trajectory of the soccer star’s career, intimate family moments, and Posh Spice candidly sharing the most challenging period in her 24-year marriage to David.
Director Fisher Stevens openly confessed to the Hollywood Reporter about David’s reluctance to talk about himself, stating, “I don’t think the guy ever sat for more than 20 minutes in his life and talked about himself.” Stevens recounted a spontaneous and unscripted moment in the documentary, where David unexpectedly interrupted an interview with Victoria, challenging her assertion of growing up “working class.” The director revealed that David was not supposed to be at home during that moment, as he was meant to be taking his daughter Harper to school.
Stevens acknowledged the unexpectedness of the situation, stating, “I knew it was great. But at the same time, oh my God, I told him he had to leave. I’m like, ‘Dude, you’ve got to get out of here and let me talk to your wife. Come on.’ But I was really glad we got that.”
The director, a documentarian and actor, shared what drew him to the project: David Beckham expressing his desire to participate. Stevens emphasized the need to approach the project differently, especially considering David’s reserved nature. He explained, “David has shut most of it down, so I knew it would take time to get it out.” Stevens highlighted Victoria’s more expressive approach to interviews, noting that she is “much more facile with language and talking and feelings and emotions.”
Despite David’s involvement as the subject and producer through his production company, Studio 99, Stevens retained the final say on the content included in the documentary.
Addressing challenges, Stevens insisted on covering the entirety of David’s life, including tough moments such as the scrutiny Beckham faced during his time in Madrid and the criticism he received for his role in the Qatar World Cup. The director chose to omit footage related to the Qatar World Cup, acknowledging the controversy surrounding the event and Beckham’s role as an ambassador.
Stevens was surprised by the extent of the abuse David and Victoria endured, particularly the mistreatment by soccer fans following the infamous red card incident at the 1998 World Cup. Despite the challenges, Stevens admired David’s ability to turn situations around and noted his compulsive behavior, emphasizing Beckham’s dedication to giving his all in everything he pursued, whether it be beekeeping, cooking, or maintaining cleanliness and order.
