For the Democratic Party, the defeat of Bob Casey is a significant blow. As Pennsylvania’s longest-serving Democratic senator and the son of a revered former governor, Casey had successfully held statewide office since 1996. Yet, this election was his first on the same ballot as Trump, whose populist appeal has reshaped the state’s political landscape.
The race remains tight, with McCormick leading by approximately 31,000 votes, a margin of just half a percentage point. McCormick’s stance on abortion proved a complex point during the campaign. While he celebrated the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, he assured voters that he would not back a federal abortion ban, instead supporting Pennsylvania’s current law allowing abortion up to 24 weeks.
In foreign policy, McCormick took a hard stance on the Biden administration’s Middle East approach. He blamed Casey for supporting what he described as the administration’s lenient policies, which he argued had emboldened Iran and led to regional instability. Seeking to strengthen his appeal among Jewish voters, McCormick frequently spoke about antisemitism and pledged stronger support for Israel. His stance resonated with some Pennsylvania voters concerned about the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Despite these policy stances, McCormick’s campaign faced its own share of criticism. Opponents attacked his hedge fund’s investments, including accusations that he profited by investing in Chinese companies tied to Beijing’s military-industrial complex.
