(Scypre.com) – Vice President Kamala Harris is facing widespread criticism after pledging millions of dollars in aid for Lebanon while residents of North Carolina continue to recover from the devastation of Hurricane Helene. Harris announced on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) that $157 million of “additional assistance” would be provided to Lebanon to address the nation’s humanitarian crisis. Harris stated that her concern was for “the security and well-being of civilians suffering in Lebanon” and that the aid would cover essential needs such as food, shelter, water, and sanitation.
However, many social media users and public figures quickly responded, criticizing the vice president for focusing on international aid while Americans are suffering from the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. Actor James Woods, known for his outspokenness, took to X to express disbelief at Harris’ post. “This has to be fake. Even Kamala Harris, the gold standard of stupid, isn’t stupid enough to post this,” Woods wrote, emphasizing that North Carolinians were “pulling the bodies of their neighbors from the wreckage.” He found it inconceivable that Harris would announce such aid in the midst of a national disaster.
Public figures like Rep. Nick Langworthy (R-N.Y.) also expressed outrage. “Could this be any more tone-deaf?” Langworthy tweeted. “We have Americans suffering and in danger right now after the hurricane, and this is what Kamala has to announce. America First!” Many echoed similar sentiments, arguing that the funds would be better spent on domestic recovery efforts, particularly in North Carolina, where many residents are struggling.
Journalist Eric Daugherty speculated on the potential political fallout for Harris, suggesting that the post indicated her campaign was floundering in key states. “To be clear – Kamala Harris’ campaign-suicidal post this evening focusing on LEBANON while major disaster rescues and recovery are underway is an admission she is losing Michigan right now,” he wrote. Texas Governor Greg Abbott also weighed in, describing the situation as “Kamala’s Katrina,” drawing comparisons to the criticism President George W. Bush faced during Hurricane Katrina.
The Biden administration has already been under fire for its handling of Hurricane Helene, with former President Donald Trump calling the federal response “the most incompetently managed ‘storm,’ at the federal level, ever seen before.” Critics argue that the administration has failed to provide adequate assistance to those impacted by the storm, and Harris’ focus on Lebanon has only intensified these grievances.
As the political fallout continues, the administration has yet to make any public response to the growing backlash. Harris’ commitment to Lebanon has become a flashpoint in ongoing debates over foreign aid and its priority relative to domestic needs, particularly during times of national crisis.
