(Scypre.com) – On the evening of Monday, July 28, 2025, a mass shooting shook Midtown Manhattan when 27-year-old Shane Tamura opened fire inside 345 Park Avenue, killing four people—including off-duty NYPD Officer Didarul Islam—before turning the gun on himself. The gunman, armed with a rifle and revolver, entered the lobby shortly after 4:30 p.m. and made his way through the building, ultimately reaching the 33rd floor, where he ended his life. The NYPD responded within minutes, securing the scene and evacuating the building, which houses major tenants like the NFL, Blackstone, and Rudin Management.
Shane Tamura, a resident of Las Vegas with roots in California, had a documented history of mental illness and previously held a concealed carry permit and private investigator license. He had no significant criminal record beyond a misdemeanor trespassing charge from 2023. Investigators later discovered a suicide note left at the scene, which expressed anger toward the NFL and concerns related to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease linked to football injuries. Authorities believe Tamura intended to target the NFL’s offices on the 5th floor but mistakenly took the wrong elevator bank and ended up on the floor occupied by Rudin Management, where the fatal rampage unfolded.
Among those killed was Officer Didarul Islam, 36, a father of two young boys with a third child on the way. Islam had been working a private security shift at the time of the shooting. Tributes have poured in from across the country, with Mayor Eric Adams visiting his family and ordering flags across New York City to be flown at half-staff. The NYPD described Islam as “the very best of us,” and the department held a solemn transfer ceremony at NewYork–Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in his honor. Another victim identified was Wesley LePatner, a senior executive at Blackstone. At least one additional individual, reportedly affiliated with the NFL, was injured but survived.
The incident has sparked widespread reactions. Mayor Adams linked the motive directly to anti-NFL grievances and called for increased awareness of mental health and building security. President Donald Trump issued a statement backing NYPD officers and condemning the attack, while Governor Kathy Hochul renewed her push for a national assault weapons ban. Law enforcement officials, including NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch and federal agents, continue to investigate Tamura’s background, online activity, and travel history to determine whether others were involved or aware of his plans.
As the city processes the trauma of yet another senseless act of violence, investigators are reviewing surveillance footage, interviewing witnesses, and analyzing Tamura’s writings to fully understand the sequence of events and underlying motivations. Meanwhile, New Yorkers and the broader nation mourn the lives lost—especially that of Officer Islam, whose selfless service and personal sacrifice have become emblematic of the tragedy. The incident has reopened conversations about workplace safety, mental health, gun laws, and the real-world consequences of untreated trauma.
