(Scypre.com) – A Secret Service agent fell victim to an armed robbery in California while President Joe Biden attended a high-profile campaign event in Los Angeles. The incident, reported by authorities on Monday, unfolded in Tustin, a city located south of Los Angeles.
According to a press release issued by the Tustin Police Department, officers were dispatched in response to a call reporting a potential robbery around 9:36 p.m. on Saturday. Upon arrival at the scene, law enforcement discovered that the victim was an off-duty Secret Service agent, who had been subjected to an armed robbery during which his bag was forcibly taken.
“Some of the agent’s belongings were later found in the area,” the release stated, indicating initial efforts to recover stolen items. However, as of the latest updates, no suspects have been identified or apprehended in connection with the incident.
Anthony Guglielmi, speaking on behalf of the Secret Service, provided further details in a statement, revealing that the agent had been returning from an official assignment when the robbery occurred. “The employee discharged their service weapon during the incident but unknown if the assailants were struck,” Guglielmi disclosed. Fortunately, he added, “We are thankful that the employee did not sustain any injuries.” The spokesperson confirmed that an active investigation into the robbery was currently underway.
Local authorities, while confirming the ongoing investigation, declined to comment further on Monday evening, underscoring the sensitivity and complexity of the case.
The identity of the Secret Service agent involved has not been disclosed by officials handling the matter. The timing of the robbery coincided with President Biden’s appearance at a major fundraising event in Los Angeles, where he was joined by prominent figures including former President Barack Obama, actors George Clooney and Julia Roberts, and comedian Jimmy Kimmel. The fundraiser, touted as Democrats’ largest fundraising effort, reportedly amassed a staggering $30 million-plus for Biden’s re-election campaign.
The incident underscores the risks faced by law enforcement personnel, even during routine activities such as returning from duty assignments. As investigations continue, authorities remain focused on identifying and apprehending those responsible for the brazen armed robbery that occurred amidst heightened security concerns surrounding the President’s visit to California.
