(Scypre.com) – One person is currently in custody after shots were reportedly fired near former President Donald Trump at his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday. Four senior law enforcement officials, who were briefed on the situation, confirmed this incident to NBC News. An AR-style rifle was also recovered in close proximity to the area.
The FBI is treating the incident as an “attempted assassination” of the former president and has launched a formal investigation. However, so far, there is no concrete evidence to suggest that Trump was specifically targeted in the shooting.
A statement from Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung confirmed that the former president was safe following the gunfire. He noted, “President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity. No further details at this time.” Meanwhile, the Secret Service released their own statement, reporting that they were collaborating with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the incident. The statement reiterated that Trump was unharmed, saying, “The former president is safe.”
Sources close to the situation revealed that the shooting occurred while Trump was between the fifth and sixth holes of his golf course. After the sound of gunfire was heard nearby, the Secret Service acted swiftly to move Trump to a secure location. He was later seen departing the golf course in his motorcade and has since returned safely to his Mar-a-Lago estate.
Law enforcement officials continue to examine the exact cause of what was believed to be gunfire. Local authorities are actively investigating the event, but at present, they have not established that Trump was the intended target of the attack.
Senator Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to express his relief following the incident. He said he had spoken with Trump and shared that the former president was “in good spirits” and “more resolved than ever to save our country.” Graham described Trump as “one of the strongest people I’ve ever known.”
Despite the harrowing event, sources confirmed that Trump’s campaign schedule for the upcoming week remains unchanged. He intends to continue his public appearances as planned.
The White House also issued a statement regarding the security breach, confirming that both President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris had been briefed on the situation. The statement expressed their relief that Trump was unharmed and assured that they would remain updated on the situation as more details emerge. Vice President Harris echoed the sentiment in a post on X, saying, “I am glad he is safe. Violence has no place in America.”
The FBI’s investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are working to determine the motive behind the incident.
