(Scypre.com) – Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill was briefly detained by Miami-Dade police on Sunday before the team’s Week 1 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The incident occurred near the team’s stadium during a traffic stop, and Hill was reportedly pulled over for speeding. Despite being handcuffed by officers, Hill was released shortly after. Several of his teammates, including defensive lineman Calais Campbell, witnessed the event and stopped to support him.
According to a statement from the Dolphins, Hill was stopped by police one block from the stadium. The team said, “This morning, WR Tyreek Hill was pulled over for a traffic incident about one block from the stadium and briefly detained by police. He has since been released.” The Dolphins also confirmed that Hill and all players involved made it to the stadium safely and were available for the game.
At a postgame press conference, Hill described the situation as “crazy” and mentioned that he was unsure why he had been handcuffed, although he confirmed that he had been pulled over for speeding. “I wasn’t disrespectful to the officers,” Hill explained. He also expressed gratitude to his teammates who intervened, stating, “For them to put their life on the line … it was amazing to see.”
A video posted on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, showed Hill lying face down as officers restrained him. Hill, known for his speed on the field, didn’t let the event affect his game. He scored an 80-yard touchdown in the Dolphins’ 20-17 victory over the Jaguars and celebrated by mimicking handcuffs.
Miami-Dade Police Director Stephanie V. Daniels confirmed that an internal investigation into the incident was underway. “Following the incident involving Tyreek Hill, I have initiated an Internal Affairs investigation to ensure a thorough review of the matter,” Daniels said. The officer involved has been placed on administrative duties pending the investigation. Daniels also emphasized her commitment to transparency, stating that the department would be accountable for any inappropriate actions by its officers.
Dolphins player Calais Campbell also recounted his experience with police during the incident. He said he was handcuffed while attempting to assist Hill and described the officers’ actions as excessive. Campbell explained that he had stopped to de-escalate the situation but was detained in the process.
Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava addressed the situation, praising police leadership for their quick response. She noted that findings from the internal review would be shared with the public. “I commend Chief Reyes and Director Daniels for the immediate steps taken in the hours that followed today’s incident with a Miami Dolphins player in calling for a swift internal review,” Levine Cava said.
Hill’s legal history has previously brought him into the spotlight. In 2014, he was arrested and pled guilty to domestic assault involving his then-pregnant girlfriend. In 2019, he was accused of battery, though no charges were filed. Last year, he settled with a Miami Beach employee who alleged that Hill had assaulted him. Despite these incidents, Hill has not faced discipline from the NFL.
