(Scypre.com) – A devastating shooting in Birmingham, Alabama left four people dead and 18 others wounded late Saturday night, with some of the injured suffering life-threatening conditions. Birmingham Police Officer Truman Fitzgerald confirmed the incident occurred in one of the city’s busiest entertainment districts, Five Points South, near Magnolia Avenue. This area is known for its bustling nightlife, attracting large crowds, particularly during weekends.
The shooting occurred just after 11 p.m. CST when multiple suspects opened fire on a crowd of people gathered outside. The victims included two men and one woman who were found unresponsive on the sidewalk with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite rapid response efforts, they were pronounced dead at the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue. A fourth victim, also a man, succumbed to his injuries later at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital.
Although the police are still piecing together the circumstances, they believe the attack wasn’t random. According to the authorities, it “stemmed from an isolated incident where multiple victims were caught in the crossfire.” Investigators are working to determine the primary target of the gunfire.
As of early Sunday, no arrests had been made. Officer Fitzgerald expressed the department’s commitment to finding those responsible, stating, “We will do everything we possibly can to make sure we uncover, identify and hunt down whoever is responsible for preying on our people this morning.”
Birmingham Police are now working closely with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to identify suspects. Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward and report to the homicide division or anonymously through Crime Stoppers, where a reward of up to $5,000 is being offered for tips leading to arrests.
The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s campus is located near the crime scene, in a district popular for its nightlife, featuring a range of restaurants, bars, and live music venues. On weekends, this vibrant area usually draws large crowds, amplifying the shock of the violence that unfolded on Saturday night. Police continue to urge caution and vigilance as they seek to apprehend those involved.
