(Scypre.com) – A heartbroken mother in Florida, grappling with the tragic loss of her 4-year-old twins who suffocated inside a wooden toy chest, has shared her family’s profound struggle to come to terms with the devastating event.
In a heartfelt Facebook post, Sadie Myers expressed her unfathomable pain at losing both her children simultaneously and in a manner that defied reason. She mused, “Few can truly grasp the agony of losing two children simultaneously, especially in circumstances that defy understanding. Yet, I find solace in the belief that there must be a purpose in the universe’s choice of them.”
She went on to contemplate, “Perhaps it was because their souls were too pure for this world.”
Sadie Myers, a mother of four residing in Jacksonville, recounted the tragic events of August 26. On the preceding night, August 25, her husband, Don Starr, had put their older sons and the twins to bed while she was at work. Upon returning home a few hours later, she routinely checked in on her sleeping children, had dinner, and retired for the night.
It was during the early hours of that morning that the twins had awakened and decided to play in their room instead of going back to sleep, a common occurrence according to Myers. Typically, they would eventually drift off to sleep amid a clutter of toys scattered about their room.
However, this time, the twins chose to return to slumber inside a cedar toy chest, where they stored their stuffed animals. Myers detailed, “They emptied out all the stuffed animals except for a couple, leaving them in there, I suppose, to make it cozier. Then, they lay down inside.”
Myers continued, “I imagine they whispered ‘good night kell kell’ and ‘night night sissy’ to each other.” Tragically, during their sleep, one of them must have shifted or kicked during a dream, accidentally causing the old wooden cedar chest’s lid to close.
The following morning, Don searched for the twins while their older siblings played outside but couldn’t find them. After a frantic search throughout the house, one of the older boys discovered their beloved twins inside the toy chest, peacefully nestled together.
Excitedly, he told his mother, “Mommy, I found them! They are so silly, just sleeping in the toy box.”
Myers rushed to their side. “Within a few moments, I knew something was amiss, but it dawned on me too late,” she lamented.
Like many parents, Myers was unaware that most wooden chests, when closed, can become airtight and soundproof.
“As they slumbered, snugly nestled together, they gradually ran out of oxygen over a few hours and peacefully passed away,” Myers recounted. “They were oblivious to their fate.”
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office responded to the home around noon, and the circumstances surrounding the tragic deaths remain under investigation. Myers emphasized the overwhelming grief that has enveloped her family.
She conveyed the immense challenge of trying not to break down in inconsolable anguish every waking moment, a struggle born out of their determination to shield their other children from witnessing their profound sorrow.
A GoFundMe campaign established for the family had garnered $24,965 in support as of Wednesday afternoon.
