(Scypre.com) – A tragic incident unfolded on Monday morning in Greensboro, North Carolina, when a police officer was fatally shot while responding to a report of an armed individual inside a local grocery store. The Greensboro Police Department confirmed the death of Officer Michael Horan, 44, during a somber press conference that afternoon.
The Incident
Officer Horan was dispatched to a Food Lion grocery store around 11:00 a.m. following a 911 call reporting an armed man inside the establishment. According to the department, Horan was the first to arrive on the scene. Despite his swift response, a “brief struggle” ensued, during which Horan was fatally shot. Authorities revealed that he “did not have time to draw or fire his weapon” before the fatal encounter.
No other injuries were reported during the incident.
The Suspect and Arrest
Greensboro police announced Tuesday that 34-year-old Tarrell Isaac McMillian was apprehended and charged with first-degree murder in connection with Horan’s death. Court records show McMillian is being held without bond at the Guilford County Jail. In addition to the murder charge, he faces multiple other charges, including reckless driving and eluding arrest, stemming from incidents in Johnston and Sampson counties.
Authorities reported that McMillian fled the scene in a vehicle shortly after the shooting. Approximately two hours later, he was spotted by sheriff’s deputies in Johnston County. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol initiated a pursuit that ended along Interstate 40, where McMillian was taken into custody “without incident.”
Ongoing Investigation
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NCSBI) is leading the inquiry into the shooting. Investigators are piecing together the sequence of events that led to Horan’s death and the subsequent arrest of McMillian.
