(Scypre.com) – A tragic shooting incident in Dallas late Thursday night has left one police officer dead and two others wounded, according to authorities. The Dallas Police Department confirmed that officers were responding to a distress call in southern Dallas when the situation escalated into a deadly confrontation.
Kristin Lowman, the communications director for the Dallas Police Department, provided details early Friday morning, explaining that the initial call was for an officer in distress. When responding officers arrived at the scene, they discovered that an officer had been shot while sitting in his marked patrol vehicle. As backup arrived, a gunfight broke out between the officers and a suspect who was present at the scene. During this exchange of gunfire, two additional officers were struck by bullets.
The suspect managed to flee the scene, leading Dallas police officers on a high-speed chase down Interstate 35E in Lewisville. The pursuit ended when the suspect stopped and exited their vehicle while armed with a long gun. The situation came to a fatal conclusion when Dallas officers shot and killed the suspect.
The three wounded officers were immediately transported to local hospitals. Tragically, the officer who was initially shot in his patrol vehicle succumbed to his injuries. One of the responding officers, who sustained a gunshot wound to the head, is currently in critical condition, while the other officer, who was shot in the leg, is reported to be in stable condition.
“Our department is hurting,” Lowman expressed during her statement. “We have officers who are injured, who are in the hospital, and we lost one of our own. We ask tonight and this morning for the thoughts and prayers of our city, for not only those who are recovering in the hospital, but for our fallen, for their family and for their loved ones, and for us as a department as well.”
As of now, officials have not provided any information regarding the possible motive behind the shooting, and the investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
