Supreme Court Denies Chauvin Another Trial

(Scypre.com) – On Monday, the Supreme Court said they won’t look into the case of a former police officer named Derek Chauvin. He was found guilty in 2021 for causing the death of George Floyd on Memorial Day in 2020.

Chauvin and his lawyers argued that the trial happened during a time when there was a lot of political trouble, and the jury might have been influenced by the fear of more riots if Chauvin was not found guilty. Chauvin’s lawyer, William Morhmann, said, “This trial got more attention before it started than any other. The riots after George Floyd’s death made the jurors worried about their safety if they said Chauvin was not guilty.”

The highest court in Minnesota also decided not to hear the case, which means they are keeping Chauvin’s conviction. Chauvin is now in jail for more than 20 years.

In 2020, George Floyd died because Chauvin pressed his knee on Floyd’s neck for almost 10 minutes, even though Floyd said he couldn’t breathe.

Judge Peter Cahill gave Chauvin the sentence after the jury found him guilty of different kinds of murder. Chauvin recently went to court again, saying he has new proof that he didn’t cause Floyd’s death. He also claimed he didn’t know about a doctor’s ideas back in 2021 that could have helped him.

Chauvin is asking the judge to cancel his civil rights conviction and give him a new trial. He says that a doctor from Kansas believes Floyd died from a rare tumor, not from what Chauvin did. This doctor didn’t check Floyd’s body but looked at the reports after he died.

Chauvin thinks if the jury knew about this, they wouldn’t have said he was guilty. George Floyd’s death led to a lot of protests and riots in the U.S. and Europe, causing damage to police stations, businesses, and vehicles in many places.
